What is IPL?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a non-ablative light treatment that uses controlled pulses of visible light to improve common concerns like brown spots and redness. In photofacial treatments, IPL delivers a broad band of light that’s absorbed by color irregularities in the skin to help your body naturally clear them over time—creating a more even, youthful look. (Michigan Medicine)

What IPL can help improve

IPL photofacials are popular for addressing:

  • Sun spots / age spots / freckles (unwanted pigmentation) (Michigan Medicine)

  • Redness, broken capillaries, and rosacea-related flushing (DermNet®)

  • Overall tone + texture (a “clearer skin” look over time) (Michigan Medicine)

Best for: clients who want visible improvement with minimal downtime and a natural-looking refresh. (University of Michigan Health)

Our device: MDElite iProElite IPL

We use the MDElite iProElite, a multi-technology platform that includes Ultra-Short Pulse IPL designed for efficient treatments and patient comfort. (MDelite)

Why this IPL is special:

  • Ultra-Short Pulse IPL with selectable wavelengths (430 / 530 / 590 nm) to customize treatments (MDelite)

  • Pulse density that can deliver up to 22 joules within a 5 millisecond pulse (high-performance delivery) (MDelite)

  • MILO (melanin) meter that measures skin melanin on a 0–100 scale to guide parameter selection and support safety-focused planning (MDelite)

What to expect at your appointment

1) Consultation + skin assessment
We’ll review your goals, health history, sun exposure, and skin type to confirm you’re a good candidate. (Cleveland Clinic)

2) Treatment
You’ll wear protective eyewear. The handpiece delivers quick light pulses to targeted areas. Treatments are typically described as a warm “snap,” and we’ll keep you comfortable throughout. (Most IPL systems also use gel and/or cooling strategies.) (DermNet®)

3) Back to your day
IPL is non-ablative and typically involves minimal downtime, making it popular for busy schedules. (University of Michigan Health)

Results timeline

Photofacials are known for gradual improvements over a brief series of treatments, rather than a single dramatic change. Some clients also do periodic maintenance depending on sun exposure and ongoing skin goals. (University of Michigan Health)

Prep + aftercare (simple but important)

To protect your skin and results:

  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning in the weeks before and after treatment (DermNet®)

  • Follow guidance on avoiding certain irritants (waxing, strong exfoliation/peels, etc.) before treatment (Skin Experts)

  • Expect possible temporary pink/red skin and a mild “sunburn-like” stinging sensation for a few hours; mild swelling can last a few days (Skin Experts)

  • Skip makeup/lotion for ~24 hours or until redness/stinging resolves (as directed) (Skin Experts)

  • Use daily SPF and gentle skincare while your skin settles

Who should postpone or avoid IPL?

We’ll screen you carefully. In general, candidacy depends on your natural skin color/type and recent sun exposure; Cleveland Clinic notes that darker skin tones can have higher risk of hyperpigmentation with laser/light-based facial treatments. (Cleveland Clinic)

If you’re pregnant, have an active skin infection, or are on certain medications, light-based treatments may not be appropriate—your provider will guide you. (Cleveland Clinic)

FAQ

Is IPL the same as a laser?

Not exactly. IPL uses a broad band of light (multiple wavelengths), while lasers use a single, more specific wavelength. (DermNet®)

Is there downtime?

Most clients have minimal downtime, with temporary redness and mild swelling possible. (Skin Experts)

What does IPL treat best

IPL is commonly used for unwanted pigmentation (sun/age spots/freckles) and redness/vascular concerns. (University of Michigan Health)

How many sessions will I need?

Photofacials typically work best as a short series, with results improving gradually over time. (University of Michigan Health)
